The Facts About Wind Energy and Emissions
By Michael Goggin Posted Sep. 01, 2010
Recent data and analyses have made it clear that the emissions savings from adding wind energy to the grid are even larger than had been commonly thought. In addition to each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of wind energy directly offsetting a kWh that would have been produced by a fossil-fired power plant, new analyses show that wind plants further reduce emissions by forcing the most polluting and inflexible power plants offline and causing them to be replaced by more efficient and flexible types of generation.
The Peak Oil Crisis: Prospects for China
By Tom Whipple Posted Sep. 01, 2010
Headlines were made recently when it was announced that in July China’s GDP surpassed that of Japan to become the world''s second largest economy. This was immediately followed by a passel of stories speculating on how long it would take China''s domestic output to surpass that of the U.S. and thus become the world’s largest and by inference most influential economy. The mean estimate of the prognosticators seems to be about 20 years so that by 2030 China could be #1. This estimate is derived, of course, by assuming that China’s economy will continue to grow at circa 10 percent each year and that the U.S. in turn will suffer from decades of stagnation.
A Nuclear Giant Moves Into Wind
By Matthew L. Wald Posted Sep. 01, 2010
Exelon, a nuclear giant that recently backed away from building new nuclear plants, is moving into wind.
The Business of Converting Existing Cars Into E.V.’s
By Jim Motavalli Posted Sep. 01, 2010
If you like the idea of an all-electric Chevrolet Equinox S.U.V., General Motors won’t sell you one, but Amp Electric Vehicles certainly will. Amp, based near Cincinnati, is one of a growing number of companies that says it believes it can make a successful business out of converting conventional cars to battery vehicles.
BP Is Already Getting Off Easy
By Rep. John Conyers Posted Sep. 01, 2010
Since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20, ending the lives of eleven men, injuring many others, and causing the largest environmental disaster in United States history, the victims have been waiting for BP to make them whole. Unfortunately, thus far BP’s response has been a day late and a dollar short -- many dollars short. Over three thousand people filed claims for personal injuries from the explosion and the resulting oil spill and cleanup effort, but BP paid only a tiny fraction of those claims, totaling less than 6,000. As respiratory problems among cleanup workers and symptoms of depression among coastal residents continue to mount, it shocks me that the fourth-largest corporation in the world has thus far paid such a paltry sum to make amends for the damage it has caused.
The Best Peak Oil Investments: Why Invest for Peak Oil?
By Tom Konrad Posted Aug. 31, 2010
The purpose of this series on peak oil investments has been to highlight companies outside the oil sector that are likely to benefit from increasing oil prices. This article explains why we should expect oil prices to rise. (Note: scroll to the end of this article to find a link to all the articles in this series.)
Empowering Actions to Save Energy Across the Country
By Eric Barendsen Posted Aug. 31, 2010
I think about energy a lot, and I''m always looking to get other people to think more consciously about energy and the ways they use it. I frequently send links to my friends and family to interesting websites and stories about people tackling our energy issues at home and at work. I also can''t help but spread the word on Facebook and Twitter about what people are doing across the country to get smart about saving energy.
How China Beat the U.S.
By Elizabeth Lynch Posted Aug. 31, 2010
China no longer needs to worry about the U.S. as a serious green-technology competitor because the U.S. just left the race. After a year-long impasse, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid confirmed on July 22, 2010 that the Democrats would not be able to secure enough votes to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act and, thus, would abandon any further efforts to do so.
Gas Prices Immune to Hurricane Disruptions Post-Katrina

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita wreaked havoc on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico energy infrastructure in August and September 2005, leaving drilling rigs in mangled metal heaps and production platforms and pipelines in rui
Banks Grow Wary of Environmental Risks
By Tom Zeller, Jr. Posted Aug. 31, 2010
Blasting off mountaintops to reach coal in Appalachia or churning out millions of tons of carbon dioxide to extract oil from sand in Alberta are among environmentalists’ biggest industrial irritants. But they are also legal and lucrative.
