British Coal Use Down by 3pct in First Nine Months of 2013

Britain’s coal fired power generation was 3% lower in the first nine months of 2013 compared to a year earlier, suggesting power sector carbon emissions in the European Union’s second largest polluter also fell.

British utilities are major buyers of carbon permits under the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme, which requires big emitters to surrender one permit for every tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) they emit each year.
