Colombian Protesters Block Oil Drilling for 6 Months
From Global Post
Residents of communities in the east-central Colombian province of Meta marked the six-month anniversary of a peaceful protest to block state oil company Ecopetrol from drilling a well near a large aquifer.
Inhabitants of Guamal, Humadea, Castilla la Nueva and Acacias have barred access to the Lorito 1 well to protest planned drilling that they say will endanger the ecosystem and public health.
“Lorito 1 has become a symbol of the country’s problems because it’s the first time communities have adopted a stance of peaceful protest and blocked access to a drill rig for such a long time,” Edgar Humberto Cruz, an environmental activist in Humadea, told Efe.
