Bulgaria Scraps Oil Pipeline Project with Russia and Greece
From Europe Online
Bulgaria‘s parliament voted Thursday to withdraw from a major oil pipeline project with Russia and Greece over financial and ecological concerns.
The legislators voted 115-25 to back out of a 2007 agreement to construct a pipeline that would carry Russian oil from the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Burgas to Alexandroupolis in Greece.
“The Burgas-Alexandroupolis project is unfeasible and unprofitable for Bulgaria,” Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov told parliament.
Martin Dimitrov, chairman of the parliamentary economic committee, said: “The project must be terminated because we can destroy our tourism for a profit of no more that 30 million dollars a year.”
