The energy company has the option of taking a 20pc stake in a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset, forming a partnership with EDF. But it is likely to formally announce a decision to walk away from the plans by January at the latest, according to The Mail on Sunday.
Only a dramatic change in Government policy on subsidising nuclear power stations would alter the decision, the newspaper cites senior company sources as saying. It suggested that Government energy policy was making long-term investment in the UK impossible.
