Natural Gas ‘Can Reduce Emissions Significantly’
From Gulf Times
Natural gas can contribute significantly to world’s major environmental challenges because of its highly efficient combustion and low carbon emissions, says a background paper on the second IEF-IGU Ministerial Gas Forum, which will be held in Doha on November 30.
When burnt to heat homes or for industrial uses, natural gas releases 25% to 30% less CO2 than oil and 40% to 50% less than coal per unit of energy produced, it said.
Natural gas releases around 60 % less than coal for every kWh sent out, when burnt to generate electricity.
By replacing five coal-fired plants with as many gas-fired plants the same volume of CO2 emission reduction can be reached as with 9,000MW of new wind power, the paper said.
